What's IIJ Research Laboratory

IIJ Research Laboratory was established with the aim of creating new, innovative fundamental technologies in Japan for the next generation Internet and contributing to society and the IIJ Group through research and development.

Vision and Mission

The Internet has rapidly found its way into households and corporates worldwide as a fundamental technology of communication and has been accepted as an indispensable communication media in our daily life. It is, however, still on its way of development and we need more and more innovations in technologies to make it an easier and safer communication infrastructure for all of us.

We, as a member of the IIJ Group, will continue to investigate into new possibilities of the internet technologies and try to propagate them widely through our active contribution to the Internet community.

With our corporate vision above, our missions are;
  • Innovation: developing new technologies and services for the next generation Internet
  • Collaboration: collaborating with the IIJ Group members as well as the Internet community
  • Outreach: sharing information, public relations and educational activities for supporting the Internet

Research Principles

The development of the Internet has significantly altered the scope and scale of information dissemination, as well as the manner we communicate. The future Internet must ensure that everyone can be connected anytime, anywhere, and have secure and equitable access to all information. Furthermore, there needs to be adequate and automated allocation of computational resources necessary for handling information. To achieve these goals, we aim to realize a distributed cloud environment that seamlessly integrates the Internet and the cloud, making the entire infrastructure available as a single computer system.

The IIJ Research Laboratory is driving research and development activities to realize the technology required for such a future Internet. Alongside conducting research and development in Internet and cloud technologies as well as associated topics, we are integrating research and development activities under the vision of "Cloud Morphing". This vision entails dynamically and optimally allocating and deploying cloud resources distributed across data centers, on-premises, and edges. It also involves automatically adjusting the configuration and resource allocation of the cloud to adapt to user usage and mobility. Through this integrated approach, we aim to accumulate the core competencies of the future IIJ Group, contributing broadly to society.

Our research activities are based on global open collaboration. We actively participate in research activities of universities and academic societies, promoting international collaboration between industry, academia, and government. At the same time, we encourage research activities that leverage the advantages of IIJ's corporate laboratory. Research outcomes are actively disclosed and shared, evaluating a variety of forms of achievements such as papers, oral presentations, book writing, software design and implementation, standardization, academic and committee activities, and educational activities, with an emphasis on value creation through research and its impact on society.

We are conducting research and development along the 3 axes shown below:

Innovating the Internet
Technical development and service creation for the next generation Internet.
Exploring the Internet
Data collection, analysis, and information sharing to understand the complex Internet.
Underpinning the Internet
Securing the Internet, operational support, collaboration, and standardization activities.
